Recursively On Virginia Tech

Via Wil Wheaton:

It’s a feeding frenzy of demagogues and frauds from all sides, rushing like ambulance chasing attorneys to find some way to blame the tragedy on whatever they already hated the day before the tragedy.

More of Thomas Sowell

I’m with Robert Love: end those damned agricultural subsidies, and lower the prices of food. After all, it’s not like the U.S. has a tragic history with over-farming and both economic and ecolological destruction, all following the one-two punch of “market-oriented” economic policies and a hitherto unprecedented heat wave.

In that vein, here’s Mr. Sowell (II, III) explaining how climate change is a farce invented by commie scientists, Democrat(ic) politicians, and the liberal media to enable socialism — a farce which they are now unable to control.

And here he is explaining how the media will stab the undefeatable American military in the back—and how that’s the only possible way the U.S. could “lose” in Iraq.

And here he is being called out for assuming that anything less than total domination by conservative sources is proof of a “liberal bias”.

And here he is suggesting that we must destroy our liberty to save it.

Ding-Dong!

The Witch is Dead! The Witch is Dead!

Here’s a gentle fist in the air, dedicated to The Wicked Witch of the Midwest, the man who made it acceptable to say “democracy” when you mean “free-market capitalism”.

One summary of his position on Chile described it as “freer markets led to free people, and that Chile had an unfree economy, which led to a dictatorship, which then implemented open economy policies, and later became politically free.” A loose translation of that would be “stop fucking with the money and we’ll let you vote, you damned peasants.”

(For the naysayers, I’ve seen the movie the summary describes, and the summary is faithful to his expressed views.)

Dying Democracy and Dehumanization

Last Wednesday night, I was calling friends to try and do a little street theater downtown Chicago, in the hopes of providing a particularly gritty infomercial and generating pressure on the Senate to not pass S.3930 (aka the “Just Confess to Something Act of 2006″). It appears I wasn’t the only one with the same idea. No one was down for it early that Thursday afternoon, and the bill went on to pass by a hefty majority.

That night, I couldn’t help but think that this is no longer my country. I’m living on the same landmass, but “America” has packed up and left for greener pastures.

That is a fiction. The America I pine after has only ever existed in the fever dreams of its bohemian idealists. America as a whole has always been a brutal, mean-spirited hypocrite. It enslaved millions of Africans in the name of God. It slaughtered millions of indigenous Americans in the name of civilization. It conquered Cuba and the Phillipines in the name of colonial liberation. It setup banana republics in Central America in the name of democracy. It used nuclear weapons in the name of peace. It impoverishes a large chunk of the planet in the name of development. It conquered Iraq in the name of freedom, and continues to decimate it in the name of stability.

Now, it has decided to let itself disappear anyone it wishes and abuse them forever — in the name of security.

Threat Levels

From Wired, via Boing-Boing:

Threat Statistics

Look closely at the “Green” threat level. Yes, you are reading that correctly. As a resident of America, you are more likely to be shot by a police officer than killed in any type of terrorist attack. Now factor in the well-documented racial bias in law enforcement strategies and arrest rates, and suddenly rap songs from 15 years ago don’t sound all that radical. Of course, nobody would even blink hard if D-12 recorded “Fuck al-Qaeda,” and 50 Cent wouldn’t get dropped from his label over a “Terrorist-Killa” single.

Kabuki Dance

Friday, on the way home from work, I figured the U.S. would try to shoot down the North Korean missile test. The NPR story mentioned that possible outcome, and they wouldn’t do so unless one of their sources mentioned it. Further, since the sources for this story would come from the foreign policy establishment, AKA the Pentagon, it’s likely this is meant as a fair warning to try and dissuade the North Koreans from testing their missile.

John Isaacs, executive director of the Center for Arms Control and Non-Proliferation, added, “This is a perfect international Kabuki dance. The North Koreans may test a missile that they will have no idea will work in the real world and the United States has a missile defense which we have no notion whether it will defend against the North Koreans. It is perfect symmetry.” Reuters, US Activates Missile Defense Amid N.Korea Dispute

Funny how most Kabuki dances cannot possibly end up with Seoul a lake of fire and Pyongyang a sea of glass.
